Before the Holidays, I Caught Up With an Old Work Colleague Who I Had Not Spoken to In a Year.
She was excited to tell me all about her upcoming wedding and how proud she was of her fiance, who was doing great in his career.
But when the conversation turned towards her career, she became visibly uncomfortable. In fact, the best thing she could say is how great it was to have two weeks off for the holidays before confessing that she was already having anxiety about going back to the office in 2017.
And what made me sad was the fact it's the third year in a row she and I have had the exact same conversation. We used to commiserate over our mutual disdain for our corporate jobs. Perhaps you are familiar with the routine.
Most nights you find yourself tossing and turning in bed, stressing about the day ahead. The next morning, you wake up lethargic and uninspired, feeling like an anvil is sitting on your chest. Tina Fey refers to it as the feeling of "Fresh Hell."
Sadly, relief doesn't come once you get to the office. There are the soul-sucking, 3-hour meetings where everyone uses corporate cliche phrases like "Let's circle back on that" and "Let's sit down next week and discuss what that new plan would look like.".
The only real point of these meetings are to set the agenda for the next pointless meeting.
After 3 hours in the conference room, you've fallen further and further behind on the work you REALLY need to get done, so you just end up bringing the laptop home to work at night. What should be a 40 hour week turns in to 50+ hours, taking you away from friends, family, the gym, or your hobbies that give you a work/life balance.
There are only 168 hours in the week, and now you're spending a third of your time doing work that brings you the least amount of joy.
This is the formula for feeling unfulfilled.
Yet, pulling the trigger and making a change can feel like a panic-inducing decision. How do you give up the security of a steady paycheck? How do you walk away from the significance of an important job title? If you can no longer introduce yourself as Senior Partner/General Manager/Vice President/Other cushy job title, then who the hell are you anyways?
And even if you figure all of THAT out, what if you make a change and it's not any better? What if you make the WRONG choice?
These are all the things my friend brought up when I asked her it was time to figure out her next move.
"Dan, I can't just quit! I need a Plan B" she exclaimed!
Here's the truth. If you are chronically dissatisfied where you are at, whether it be in your career, relationship, health, or overall happiness, what you REALLY need is a new Plan A.
Because frankly, "Plan B" is bull***t.
It will always be something you push off onto the horizon. You will tell yourself you can wait to make a change until the economy improves, when the kids or out of the house, or when you feel like you're "ready."
I'm here to tell you that you are never going to "feel ready." Stretching yourself beyond your comfort zone will feel scary today, a month from now, or in 5 years.
So the real question is "When is enough enough?" Have you held back the best version of you for too long? Are you no longer content to go through the motions? Are you ready to trade in that "fresh hell" feeling for energy, passion, and fulfillment?
If so, what you need is a mentor, a structure, and a system to help you stop procrastinating and take new action, because what you've been doing over and over will not deliver new results. Your willingness to step into the unknown is vital if you want to Elevate Your Life.
I'm happy to announce a New Years program to jumpstart your 2017, creating a bulletproof plan for meaningful change.
When you signup for my Elevate Your Life breakthrough coaching program, you will see that coaching is not about pushing you off the ledge, making you quit your job tomorrow, and putting you in financial peril. My work is to give you time-tested strategies to find real answers to life's most daunting questions:
- Who are you really? (Spoiler: It's not a job title)
- What will make you truly fulfilled? (Spoiler: It might not be what you're telling yourself.")
- What's holding you back from getting unstuck?
- How do you tap into your intuition and trust that you're making the right move?
- How do you put yourself and your needs first without feeling selfish? (This one is vital to making progress)
- How do you take courageous action in the face of uncertainty?
You and I will connect weekly as I customize a program to meet you where you are at, addressing your specific needs and challenges, all in a safe, supportive, confidential environment.
So what results do my clients get when they make an investment in themselves?
There was the client who told me during our first session that the only thing that was working in her life was her finances. Given the fact that she never stopped working, (she even had to take work calls in the middle of our first 3 sessions), I wasn't surprised she was being compensated well. She was doing the work of 5 people!
However, it was a big price to pay, as she had truly lost all connection to herself. Basic things like daily showering were a chore, her dating life was a mess, and she had stopped pursuing any hobbies that brought her joy. I've had clients come to me in a bad spot, but this client was the lowest starting point that I've personally seen.
I'm happy to say she's also made one of the biggest turnarounds I've ever seen. By the Summer, she left the job she hated to go to cosmetology school, she's making plans to open her own barber shop, she's singing in a band for fun, and settled down with a guy that makes her happy.
She's living life on her terms. She finally feels fulfilled.
Every one of us is at a different stage in our personal growth and dealing with different challenges. And while I don't know where you are at in this moment because we haven't spoken personally, I do know that I've probably been there and found a solution.
