It was supposed to be my "dream job..."
I moved to Tampa in August of 2014 for a job with the biggest title and highest level of responsibility of my career. The lower cost of living in Florida made it incredibly financially lucrative. I thought this was “it”—the moment when I crossed the finish line and could finally feel fulfilled.
So when I met my buddy Erik for dinner after only 4 months on the job, I was surprised at what came out of my mouth when he asked me how things were going.
“Erik—this has to be my last job in radio. I can’t do this anymore.”
After 18 years on the hamster wheel, I was tired. I was over sitting in conference rooms where people disingenuously applauded for one another and overused corporate catch phrases like "let's circle back on that" (translation: let's schedule 3 more meetings and not make a decision).
I was tired of working in an industry which valued profit margins over purpose. I was tired of working in a culture that was slow, linear, and stagnant. I was tired of feeling powerless to be a change agent, always hearing “this is how we’ve always done it” when I pitched a new idea.
More than anything, I was tired of feeling tired.
Like so many people I talk to today, I had a dozen stories about why I couldn’t leave. You might have used some of these excuses yourself:
“I don’t know what other career I’m even qualified for.”
“If I could just win the lottery, I’d walk away and figure out what’s next.”
“I’m so confused.”
"I can't make this kind of money anywhere else."
"I can't earn an income doing what makes me happy."
“I need a 2-year plan…”
However, this time felt different. As I sat at dinner with my friend, I didn’t just make a committed decision to move on, I gave myself a timeline to do it. I felt amazing for about 10 seconds until my friend asked another question.
“What is your plan?”
I had no clue, but it was time to find out. And that scared the living hell out of me.
According to the Gallup organization, 2 in 3 Americans are disengaged at their job. 51% of workers say they intend to find a new job in the next 12 months.
Yet, an overwhelming majority of those people will still find themselves stuck in the same cubicle this time next year. Why?
Because when you are standing at a crossroads in your life and career, you must make a choice between wishing and dreaming for things to get better on their own (How’s THAT worked out for you up until now?)
Or you can leave your comfort zone and create something better yourself.
I didn’t realize it as I sat at the restaurant with my friend, but I had actually taken the most important step to getting unstuck —I decided to act with courage before having clarity about what I wanted to do next.
If you take nothing else from this blog, please hear me when I say this:
We have the formula backwards. We tell ourselves we need to know the outcome BEFORE we can take courageous new action. We want control. We want to know precisely how things will unfold and on what timeline. If we can have 100% assurance we won’t fail, THEN we’ll take chance on our dreams.
That’s not how The Universe works.
Nothing worthwhile has ever been created with a known attachment to the outcome. Clarity comes AFTER courage.
We find the answers we seek through trial and error, which means the challenges and setbacks we encounter on our path are as necessary as the successes. They move us closer to finding the truth. They help us build our resilience while we deepen our faith in a Universe that is always supporting us... even when we don’t see evidence of it.
At the end of the day, fulfillment doesn’t come from getting the new job, making a million dollars, or buying a Tesla. It comes from growing into the kind of person who can have those things.
Life is a cycle of growth, satisfaction, stagnation, and then another call to grow and become even more.
There are 2 paths you can take when it comes to your growth:
- You can try to figure it out on your own. This will ultimately work, although it's an excruciatingly slow and painful process. Or…
- You can find an expert mentor who has already achieved what you want. They will help you see your blind spots, avoid the pitfalls, and dramatically speed up your learning curve.
For the first 6 months of my career reinvention journey. I tried to do it all by myself. I thought it was "weak" to ask for help. I continued to go to work during the day while I threw things against a wall on the weekends to see what would stick. I signed up for a writing workshop in NYC, thinking I could one day write the next great American Broadway play. After writing for weeks, I found myself completely disconnected from what I saw on the page. It didn’t feel right.
Yet, I still knew there was a bigger idea within me waiting to come forward. I just had suppressed my desires and natural gifts for so long, I forgot who I really was and what I could offer the world.
Tired of spinning my wheels, I hired my first life coach. I needed an outside perspective from someone who could see my blind spots and help me figure out how to reconnect with the man I was before I valued the opinions of the world more than my own intuition.
With the right mentor, structure, and implementation plan, the real Dan began to re-emerge quickly. I got clear not only about what I wanted, but how I could use my innate gifts to help others instead of continuing to commit passive suicide each day working for a company I didn’t believe in.
This is how I left corporate America and created my own path. This is how my coaching career was born.
Over the last 18 months, I've worked with people in 8 countries, had my writing featured on websites like the HuffPost, booked paid speaking engagements all over the country, and co-authored my first book (those writing classes did come in handy, even if I never wrote a play),
I've paid my bills every month since I walked away from the certainty of the steady paycheck. My income is growing each month. More importantly, I wake up each day excited knowing I am fulfilling my life purpose. I feel like me. I'm happy.
Now my mission is to teach what I’ve learned along the way and help you get unstuck, overcome your fear, and create a life you didn’t know was possible.
I'm not saying your purpose in life is to become a coach. Nor am I saying your destiny is to work for yourself.
I'm just offering you a program to help you discover YOUR unique path.
What would you say if I told you that you could leave your soul-sucking job by the end of the year?
What if I told you I could help you do the work you were born to do, even if you don’t know what that is right now?
What if I told you I could help you replace feelings of frustration and overwhelm with freedom and opportunity in just 12 weeks?
I am ready to work with 5 committed individuals who are ready to go to the next level and "Escape the 9 to 5."
