“I Just Want to Feel Like I’m Making a Difference.”
It’s one of the most common things I hear from new clients. There is a subtle change of consciousness happening in the world right now. We’ve reached our limit with corporate jobs. The lack of purpose in our day-to-day work has grown intolerable and many people are looking for another way to make an impact.
The biggest roadblock is where to begin. Many of us struggle to figure out what we really have to contribute.
“I’m not good at science. I’m never going to cure a disease.”
“I don’t have Bill Gates money to throw around towards causes I love.”
“I’m not a great writer, so I can’t pen the next great American novel.”
Don’t worry, you don’t have to.
Every person on the planet, regardless of their education, income, race, or gender has a gift they can give in this very moment. This gift will make a massive impact, if not in the world, then in the lives of the people around you.
I think it’s more than a “gift.” It’s a superpower. It can never be taken away from you. It costs you nothing to access aside from a little courage and vulnerability.
However, I will warn you. Once you uncover this power, you have a responsibility to start using it for good.
Your superpower is your story.
The irony is up until now, this beautiful gift you have been given has been precisely the thing you fear most. It's possible you’ve spent years running from your story. You’ve buried yourself in work or addictive behaviors as you attempt to numb out and disown it.
But here’s the hard truth. If you don’t own your story, it will own you.
Why have you been holding back?
It could be your story elicits feelings of shame. Part of you believes sharing your struggles will make you look weak. Your family may have encouraged you not to speak your truth because it will cause embarrassment or drama.
For me, growing up as part of the “rich family” in our hometown, I felt immense pressure to hold up a happy public image in my early years. I didn’t talk to my friends about our family secrets. I started doing stand-up comedy routines at the school talent show to create a funny alter-ego to mask the tremendous hurt and anxiety I felt.
When my depression became unbearable in my mid-20’s, I started to see a therapist. My parents urged me not to tell people because everyone would think I was “crazy.” In private, I would try to work through my pain while simultaneously trying to disown my past, preferring to maintain my funny radio persona.
But it all came at a huge price.
It kept my relationships at a surface level, leading to more feelings of loneliness and isolation. It also led to even more anxiety because I still didn’t feel the freedom to be ALL of me. My wicked sense of humor was what people knew me for, but I was afraid to let them know I was caring and empathetic. I was afraid to open my heart and get rejected. I thought I couldn’t be funny and authentic at the same time.
These same demons came up for me when I started my coaching business. Those of you who’ve been with me from the beginning know most of the early emails I sent you were clinical “how-to” lessons on self-development. I was hesitant to share the context of how I learned these lessons on my own. When I thought about revealing my story, I would be filled with thoughts like:
“Nobody cares about your background…”
“Don’t be so self-indulgent…”
“People will be put off by this…”
It wasn’t until I began sharing some of the most vulnerable parts of my life’s journey that my message began to spread. My mailing list has tripled. I’m getting more calls for speaking engagements. Ultimately, I’m finding more people who I can serve.
Why? Because our story has the power to help others heal.
If your goal is to inspire others, the best way to do it is by sharing how you have overcome a challenge they currently face.
It’s not easy. It will require you to start owning ALL of you story... even the ugly parts. It will require you to shift your focus. You can’t continue to live in the past, trying to re-write the first few chapters which can never be changed. You must make peace with your past and direct your energy to what really matters... writing a new, empowering ending.
Here’s the best part. Your story doesn’t have to be complete before you begin to share. I can tell you my journey is still a work in progress which is unfolding moment by moment. My stories I’ve shared with you are like only being two books into the entire Harry Potter series. I still don’t know how it will end, but I’m excited to find out. More than anything, I hope my first few chapters will inspire you to take the courageous step to start sharing yours.
